Cause of Death Pending for Man Found in River

TOPEKA, Kan. - On Friday, October 17 at 4:53 p.m., the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department along with the Topeka Police Department responded to a call that a body that had been found in the Kansas River near the 200 block N. Kansas Ave.

The body has been identified as Jason McNaughton, 31, Topeka who was reported missing on September 20, 2008. Police say McNaughton was last seen by his wife on Sept. 20 when he left their room at the Motel 6 around 11:40 p.m. and never returned. His wife and mother reported him missing two days later.

Investigators say it's possible his body may have floated a short distance or several miles before getting stuck in branches near the shore.

Monday, the Shawnee County Coroner's Office reported that an autopsy has been conducted, but they are waiting for toxicological testing before releasing a cause of death. They said the testing results could be back this week or next.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of McNaughton’s disappearance and death.
