Wichita - A lively debate in Wichita Tuesday between the two candidates for a United States Senate seat from Kansas.

Republican incumbent Pat Roberts and Democratic challenger Jim Slattery discussed issues ranging from the economy to energy.

Responding to accusations made by Slattery, Roberts defended his vote against the $700 billion bailout plan passed more than a week ago. He also says he is proud of a provision in the latest farm bill aimed at closing the so-called Enron loophole that exempted some electronic markets from government oversight.

The debate was hosted by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters at their annual meeting. The two candidates will debate again Wednesday in Overland Park.
