Topeka City Council members had a short night Tuesday.

Municipal Court fees were among the items on a short agenda presided over by councilman Bill Haynes in Mayor Bill Bunten's absence. Members heard first reading of an ordinance that would allow judges to make people charged or convicted in court pay costs for incarceration, attorneys fees and other expenses. It would also increase witness fees from five to ten dollars. The council could vote on it as soon as next week.

The meeting began with council members paying tribute to after school programs. They issued a proclamation recognizing the Northeast Kansas Out-of-School Alliance and its "Lights on After School" efforts.

Alliance members work to give kids a safe place to stay after school, during the summer and on days off school.
