GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) _ A former elementary school principal in Great Bend will spend 60 days in jail.
Don Atkinson, who now lives in Colorado, pleaded guilty in August to six counts of theft by deception. He was ordered on Friday by District Court Judge Hannelore Kitts to begin the sentence immediately in the Barton County Jail.
As part of a plea bargain, Atkinson has agreed to reimburse $41,000 within four months. Atkinson will also serve two years of supervised probation.
Atkinson was a principal at Jefferson Elementary School. He had faced more than 60 counts stemming from the theft of more than $40,000 from a PTA and student council. The money was stolen between 2002 and 2007.
Atkinson resigned in November 2007 after PTA leaders went to school administrators, who called authorities.
