MCPHERSON, Kan. (AP) _ A 19-year-old McPherson mother pleads
no-contest to child abandonment, and prosecutors say she likely
will face probation.
Deidre Harman dumped her 6-week-old daughter in a trash bin near
her home in May and then reported the baby kidnapped. Police
searched for several hours before finding the infant unharmed in a
Harman had requested a mental evaluation at a previous hearing,
but she took a plea agreement Monday after a judge found her
competent to stand trial. Her baby is in state custody while her
legal issues play out.
Prosecutors dropped a charge of child endangerment as part of
the plea deal. They'll also allow probation instead of requesting
Harman is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 15.
