3-Month Old Critically Injured, Fort Riley Soldier Accused Of Abuse

A Fort Riley soldier was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of child abuse that left a three-month old with critical injuries.

Junction City Police Lt. Jeff Childs says staff from Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri contacted the department around 1pm Wednesday. Childs said the infant was transferred there from Geary Community Hospital earlier in the day and staff believed evidence showed the injuries were the result of abuse.

The infant remained in critical condition Wednesday night.

The Junction City Police Department’s Investigations Division responded to Children’s Mercy Hospital to look into how the child was injured. They applied for a warrant to have Kansas City, Missouri Police arrest 22-year-old Cyjay Echon, a Ft. Riley soldier, who resides in Junction City.

Echon is being held on $150,000 bond. Junction City Police continue investigating.
