Jefferson County Cut Funding In Budget

OSKALOOSA, Kan. (AP) _ Jefferson County commissioners on approved their 2009 budget that cuts funding from the county attorney's office and other departments.

Commissioner David Christy said Monday that the commission will work with incoming County Attorney Caleb Stegall when he takes office in January. He defeated Michael Hayes in August.

Some residents were upset about a proposed $30,000 cut to fund the office for 2009 that included a $10,000 transfer to pay for county counselor services for Hayes' Oskaloosa law firm.

Commissioners said they were trying to make the county counselor's office a more attractive position with more responsibility, including attending all planning and zoning meetings. They said Hayes knew nothing about the proposal.
