WALTON, Kan. (AP) _ Wayne Alexander of Walton says he knows
frustration with gas prices isn't new.
After all, Alexander has made his living the last three decades
by converting gas-powered vehicles into electric automobiles. He
owns Electric Blue Auto Conversions in Walton.
Alexander says his business has been steady over the years, but
it's getting busy now that gas has long passed the $3 dollar mark.
He says he's got about 12 cars to convert just in the next month.
He charges $12,500 to replace gas engines with electric motors.
Options, such as air conditioning, power steering and electric
heat, are extra. He says the motors he installs last for about 5
million miles, are virtually maintenance-free and are more
efficient than gas engines.
