TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A man accused of killing a Topeka woman nearly 19 years ago goes on trial.
Jury selection begins Monday morning in Shawnee County for Thedore D. Netherland. He's charged with premeditated first-degree murder in the killing of 42-year-old Karen Estes on Oct. 29, 1989.
Estes was repeatedly stabbed as she left a community center in Topeka in 1989.
Investigators got a break in the winter of 2006, when District Attorney Robert Hecht received two letters that provided new information about the Estes slaying. One of the letters was from Terence Wilkins, Netherland's uncle, who said Netherland confessed to stabbing Estes.
