WAKARUSA, Kan. - Family members say Larry D. Carls has been missing since the early morning hours of September 9, 2008. They say he left his Wakarusa home with clothing and two credit cards. He left a note for his wife.

The family says although it appears Carls left of his own will, they believe he has been manipulated by a radical religious group in recent months.

Carls' family members say he had been watching DVD's from a local religious club and began acting strange in the past six months, distancing himself from friends and fasting for long periods of time.

Carls is believed to be in an isolated, rural location, based on information the family gathered from his note and the DVD's. They are concerned that if he has continued fasting, he could be in poor physical and mental health and in a dangerous situation.

Carls may be driving a silver, 2002 Ford F350 diesel one-ton flatbed pick-up. The Shawnee County tag number is WVA 543.

Shawnee County deputies have been notified that Carls is missing. He has been put on the FBI's missing persons list, according to the family.

The family is offering a monetary reward for information leading to the location and return of Carls.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Shawnee County Sheriffs Office at (785) 368-2200.
