Fitness Center Rallies for a Cancer Cure

TOPEKA, Kan. - Wood Valley Racquet Club & Fitness Center, 2909 SW 37th St., Topeka, hosted its first Rally for the Cure, a breast cancer awareness campaign on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 8a.m. - 5p.m.

This year marks the first time that the club has pledged its support. They expected a group of 90 participants to come out Saturday and enjoy fitness classes, racquetball and tennis.

Fitness activities were held all morning beginning at 8a.m., followed by racquetball and tennis from 2:00 - 5:00p.m.

"We are proud to lead this grassroots, cause oriented program," said Anne Anderson, Director of Marketing and Tennis Promotions for Wood Valley. "Through Rally for the Cure events, millions of dollars are being raised for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. We will also be helping get the lifesaving message of early detection to our participants.

"Everyone is invited and we only require a $20 donation to the Rally for the Cure."

All participants received goody bags including an exclusive Rally bandana, Rally pink ribbon pin, Rally towel, Rally charm and a free magazaine subscription plus a chance at a grand prize," said Anderson.

The mission of Rally for the Cure has been to emphasize the importance of early detection in the successful treatment of breast cancer and to support the promise of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to eliminate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.

According to Komen for the Cure, each year breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 35-54, and the disease also accounts for more than 75% off all cancer deaths in women 55 years of age and older.
