Economy Tops Questions in First Debate

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) _ The first presidential debate is under way.

Barack Obama accused John McCain of backing Bush administration
policies that have landed the economy in a big mess. McCain fired back that he is the candidate with the experience in working out these issues. Both men agreed Congress must act soon to prevent millions of Americans from losing their jobs and homes.

Foreighn policy was supposed to be the focus of this first meeting, but with the colleagues in Washington negotiating a $700 billion economic bailout plan, questions on the financial crisis took over the first 40 minutes.
