LAWRENCE - Work is starting on an expansion of wetlands that is part of a plan to complete the proposed South Lawrence Trafficway. But local officials and residents still can't be sure that the road will follow the effort to lessen its environmental effects.
The $975,000 expansion of the Baker Wetlands is being financed by the Kansas Department of Transportation. The work will add 142 acres to the 573-acre wetlands by plowing under farm fields and replanting them with native plants.
The trafficway is the missing link between segments of Kansas 10 running west of Lawrence into the city and east of Lawrence to Johnson County. But it's inspired opposition for years.
