LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ Members of the Kansas congressional delegation and some of their challengers agree that bulletproof taxpayer protection is needed in any Wall Street bailout.

President Bush on Wednesday night pushed for passage of a $700 billion plan to address the current credit crisis, warning that no bailout could lead to a long and painful recession.

Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Boyda said any action to help the financial markets must protect taxpayers; her Republican challenger Lynn Jenkins said the Bush package must give taxpayers "a fair shake.''

Democrat Jim Slattery, who is running against GOP Sen. Pat Roberts, said Bush's plan made him "mad as hell.'' Roberts' office said the senator has been taking Kansans' questions about the plan to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.
