Suspect Will Get Competency Hearing

WINFIELD, Kan. (AP) _ The suspect in last year's killing of a
Cowley College freshman faces a hearing next week on whether he's
competent to stand trial.
A judge on Wednesday set Oct. 1 as the hearing date for
25-year-old Justin Thurber.
The Arkansas City man is charged with capital murder in the
January 2007 abduction and murder of Jodi Sanderholm. The
19-year-old victim was found dead in the Kaw Wildlife Area.
Thurber's trial is set to begin in mid-October. If the judge
determines he's mentally incompetent, Thurber will be taken to
Larned State Hospital and could be tried later.
A hearing set for Friday on several pretrial motions has been
canceled pending the competency ruling.
