Fire at Salon Under Investigation

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Topeka Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 4005 SW 21st Street, shortly after 1:05am Saturday, September 20, 2008.

The two-story structure is occupied as a beauty salon on the lower level and it houses three apartment units on the upper level.

The first arriving fire officials reported smoke showing on the south/alley side of the structure.

A primary search of the lower level was negative and while three people (one adult female and two adult males), were able to exit the structure on their own, firefighters had to rescue two additional people (one adult female and a child), from the upper level of the burning structure.

The Topeka Fire Department’s Fire Investigations Unit was summoned to this incident to assist with a cause and origin investigation; that investigation revealed:
• Cause (of this fire) – undetermined and remains under investigation.
• Origin (of this fire) – within a utility room at the rear of the property.
• Estimated dollar loss - $150,000.00 (one hundred fifty thousand dollars), $100,000.00 is estimated structural damage/loss and $50,000.00 is estimated content damage/loss.

AMR was on the scene of this incident and they assisted with preliminary assessments of all five of the people who where in the structure, at the time of the fire. No one appeared to need additional assessment therefore, no transport was necessary.

The Kansas Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross was requested and they responded to this incident to assist four adults and one child with immediate post-fire related needs.
