Hurricane Ike Blamed For Plant Shutdown

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plans to close its radial truck tire division in Topeka for a week.

The company said Friday it will shut down the operation beginning Monday, idling about 500 workers, or almost a third of the plant's work force.

Goodyear spokeswoman Amy Brei blamed the shutdown on Hurricane Ike forcing a chemical plant in Texas to close, as well as plants belonging to the company's suppliers.

The plant will continue making off-road and military tires.

This is the second time this year the radial truck tire division has closed. It was shut down for six days in March in response to a drop in demand and increasing costs.
