The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will hold a public comment period regarding the proposed expansion of a construction and demolition landfill and initiation of a source-separated composting facility operated by Linn County.
The landfill is currently operated under a permit from KDHE and is located at 4067 Vernon Road, northeast of the town of Prescott.
Linn County has submitted an application to vertically expand their 10-acre construction and demolition landfill increasing the landfill’s final elevation to about 20 feet above the current grade elevations. This permit modification also delineates the boundary of the 2.82-acre area permitted for waste tire disposal. The permit modification would result in a 40-acre landfill site with 12.82 acres permitted for waste disposal and 1.0 acre permitted for source-separated composting.
A copy of the administrative record including the draft permit, permit application, engineering drawings and other information will be available for public review from Friday, September 26 through Monday, October 27, 2008 during normal business hours at the Mound City Public Library, 509 Main Street, Mound City; at the KDHE Topeka office, 1000 S.W. Jackson St., Suite 320, Topeka; and at the KDHE Southeast District Office, 1500 West Seventh Street, Chanute. The permit application form is also available at www.kdheks.gov/waste.
KDHE will accept written comments on the proposed facility expansion from Friday, September 26, 2008 until 5 p.m. Monday, October 27, 2008. Comments should be mailed to Charles Bowers at the KDHE Southeast District Office, 1500 W. 7th St., Chanute, KS 66720; they can also be faxed to (620) 431-1211, or emailed to email@example.com.
Mailed comments postmarked by October 27, 2008 and received within one week thereafter will also be considered. After the comment period closes, KDHE will respond in writing to all formal comments received.
