DENVER (AP) _ A high school football player from Kansas is in a coma at a Denver hospital with a brain injury suffered during a play in a game last weekend.
Pratt High School officials say 16-year-old linebacker Luke Southard was knocked unconscious by a helmet-to-helmet hit in Friday night's game against Scott City. Hundreds of people gathered on the football field Sunday night for a candlelight vigil and prayer.
Southard was flown to Colorado because bad weather didn't allow a flight to Wichita. His family's pastor said Southard underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and remove blood clots.
He also said Southard is in a drug-induced coma, and that his condition has been upgraded to stable.
