A Statement from Governor Kathleen Sebelius:
“On September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our country claimed the lives of thousands of innocent Americans.
“To honor their memory, and the memory of the men and women who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, we now recognize that date as Patriot Day.
“On Patriot Day our nation comes together to recognize those who died in 2001, but also those men and women who work to preserve our freedom day in and day out. We also recognize the patriotism evident each day in communities across the country. From Greensburg to the Gulf Coast, ordinary Americans have reached out to one another and come together to strengthen this great Nation.
“I have directed flags be flown at half-staff on Thursday, September 11th throughout State of Kansas facilities and buildings from sunup until sundown. I urge all Kansans to do the same at their homes and businesses to demonstrate to the world that the American spirit endures.”
President George W. Bush issued a proclamation requesting all states lower their flags on Patriot Day.
