TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The U.S. Department of Education has designated five Kansas schools as "Blue Ribbon'' schools.

The state announced the honors Wednesday.

The awards are based on students' scores on math and reading tests this spring, given under the federal No Child Left Behind law. That law requires all students to be proficient in reading and math by 2014.

The award honors schools that have high test scores overall or that achieve high scores when at least 40 percent of their students are disadvantaged.

The Kansas schools honored were Beeson Elementary in Dodge City, Blue Valley North High in Overland Park, Ellsworth Elementary in Ellsworth, Lincoln Elementary in Lincoln and Syracuse High in Syracuse.
