HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) _ A western Kansas legislator who lost her Republican primary race by 17 votes is running a write-in campaign to keep her seat.
Rep. Virginia Beamer, of Oakley, says she knows many Republicans who didn't vote in the 118th District.
Don Hineman, of Dighton, defeated Beamer. The final count gave Hineman 1,882 votes to Beamer's 1,865. There is no Democratic candidate.
Hineman says he was sure Beamer would run a write-in campaign and had heard rumors to that effect. He says he welcomes the campaign before the Nov. 4 general election.
Beamer, a former Logan County commissioner, won the seat in 2004 and was re-elected in 2006.
