Kansas City Laptops Still Not Returned

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ Some of the laptop computers loaned to students in Kansas City, Kan., a year ago still haven't been returned to the school district.

The school district is launching an inventory database to keep track of who has the $1,000 Apple MacBooks and possibly get the missing ones back. School officials say 60 of the 5,770 laptops checked out last fall are unreturned.

One computer that was sold online was returned to the district after the buyer saw an immoveable tag on the machine saying it was the district's.

District technology and information services director Joe Fives said he's confident that the database tracking system can locate the laptops.

Fives is optimistic the system can pinpoint the location of the missing laptops -- anywhere in the world -- assuming the user connects to the Internet.
