Westmoreland Teen Continues Recovery After Being Trapped in Car

WESTMORELAND, Kan.- Laurel Lauer, 16, was reported missing after she didn't show up to work or home Friday evening. Pottawatomie County officials say Lauer was in a one-vehicle accident Friday about 4 p.m. A missing person's report was filed Friday.

Pott County Sheriff Greg Riat said a landowner noticed a fence down on Westmoreland Road, about one mile east of Cree Road, and that led him to Lauer's wrecked vehicle at 8:40 a.m. Saturday. Riat says the location of the vehicle was so far off the side of the road in an area covered by heavy foliage, that it wasn't easily visible from the roadway. The landowner found Lauer unconscious inside her car.

Lauer was life-flighted to Stormont-Vail in Topeka. Stormont-Vail reports she is still in serious condition as of Tuesday night.

No word what caused the accident, but a friend of Lauer's said those rural roads can be dangerous because there is no shoulder. "If you go off the side, it's really easy to overcorrect," she said.
