TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is asking U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer to declare Ellsworth County an agricultural disaster area for crop losses.

The governor made the request Friday, saying storms between March and June took a heavy toll on crops. The area was hit with floods, hail and tornadoes during that four-month stretch.

If Schafer grants the request, farmers and ranchers would be eligible for low-interest loans, plus any aid that may be available under the recently passed federal farm bill.

Sebelius made a similar request on Aug. 1 for Allen, Graham, Hodgeman and Rooks counties.
