TOPEKA, Kan. - Shawnee County Sheriff Deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers abandoned active search efforts to locate the man who ran from them during a routine traffic stop in Topeka Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff deputies say the man started acting suspicious after he was pulled over on I-70 and Valencia Road at about 3:15 p.m.

They say the man ran northwest on Valencia into a wooded area, even running right out of his shoes. The search was called off about 5:30 p.m.

Officials found suspicious items inside the vehicle, which has out-of-state tags. They are following up an investigation of the items at this time.

Deputies describe the man as an hispanic male, 5'4" - 5'5" tall, weighing 140 pounds, not wearing shoes.

He was last seen in the area northwest of Valencia Road near I-70.

Anyone who believes they may have seen the man is asked to call the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office at (785) 368-2200.
