Laura Bush Introduces President's Video Talk

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ First lady Laura Bush has gone before the
Republican National Convention to praise John McCain as ``a real
American hero'' and introduce President Bush to speak to delegates
by video hookup.

The live introduction and remote-control speech by her husband was an oddity in the life of political conventions. The president had been scheduled to appear in person on Monday but chose instead to go to Texas to follow federal assistance efforts in connection
with Hurricane Gustav.

Mrs. Bush had appeared briefly on Monday night with Cindy McCain to urge people to make charitable donations to victims of the hurricane along the Gulf Coast. She got a warm reception when she
told them that ``I am thrilled to be a part of this historic
convention.''
