ABILENE, Kan. (WIBW) - A historic theater in Abilene has been destroyed by fire.

The fire was reported at around 7:00 p.m. at the Great Plains Theatre.

Thick smoke and flames were coming from the structure when crews arrived.

Witnesses tell KCLY Radio that the roof has collapsed on the building.

The theatre's Executive Director told The Salina Journal that no one was inside the building at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Last year, the historic Kirby House in Abilene was lost after a fire started in the basement near the furnace and quickly spread.
