Manhattan Residents Split Over Bio Lab
Manhattan is one of six finalist sites for a bio and agro defense laboratory. It would pump jobs and money into the economy -- but would devastate the United States if a disease such as foot and mouth disease were to get out into the population.

(Manhattan, KS)--The Department of Homeland Security was in Manhattan today Thursday discussing a possible national bio and agro defense facility. NBAF for short.

Many residents showed up at the open meeting to voice their opinions on the lab. Some support the lab, while others say it is dangerous to mix a lab that studies dangerous animal diseases with Kansas livestock.

Homeland Security and Kansas State experts say the lab would be extremely safe. All bases would be covered when it comes to protecting the safety of workers, and the community around the facility.

Governor Kathleen Sebelius says Kansas is the perfect location due to the intense interest in agriculture, as well as Kansas State's resources.

Homeland Security says an accident is unlikely, but would be terrible for the United States if it happened. It could cost the country between $2.8-and-$4.2 Billion dollars, mainly due to export losses.

Still, Sebelius believes the economic positives outweigh the unlikely negatives. A final decision on the location is expected December 2008.
