OMAHA, Neb (WOWT)--
Nikko Jenkins' sister Erica complained to a judge today about her treatment. She doesn't understand why she is ordered to wear leg and arm shackles along with an 8,000 volt stun bracelet when she appears in court.
"This is Hannibal Lecter stuff," she told her attorneys before the hearing. "They are doing this to (expletive) with me. It's a conspiracy. I don't see anyone else wearing this. You think I will give them the satisfaction of stunning me with this. It irritates me. I'm not an animal."
Hannibal Lecter is a fictional serial killer from the 1991 movie, The Silence of the Lambs.
Minutes later, her attorney Beau Finley reiterated the complaints to Judge Peter Battailon. “We believe there's not a need and it's cumbersome and uncomfortable.”
Erica's brother, Nikko Jenkins, also wore leg and arm shackles to court along with a stun belt.
Erica Jenkins is facing a number of charges including Murder in connection with the shooting death of Curtis Bradford, Robbery and Criminal Conspiracy -- investigators say she was the driver who stopped in front of Andrea Kruger's SUV.
She's also facing charges for incidents that allegedly happened after she was in custody -- Assault by a Confined Person and Assault on an Officer.
At one point, she pushed over a podium and swore at a judge in jail court.
Judge Battailon told her attorneys to bring up the issues again if they cannot reach an accord with jail staff. "I don't know all the reasons why they are doing that. They are responsible for her safety and the safety of others."
He said she won't need the shackles and can dress appropriately when her jury trial beings on September 22. It's expected to last a week-and-a-half.
Erica's uncle, Warren Levering, appeared in court immediately after the hearing. His appearance lasted a few minutes. He waived his right to a speedy trial. He's due back in court later this month to be heard on other motions.
