A Jay Shideler Elementary School teacher decided to enter a San Diego marathon put on by the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.
Christie Carson's campaign was not only to run, but to raise funds for Matthew McCue, a Hutchinson second grader with acute lymphocytic leukemia.
On four days this month students could wear a hat if they donated a dollar for Matthew.
"I have a disease too. I'm a diabetic. I want to help all the other people with other diseases, try to get a cure for that too," said Jonathan Burden, a student.
The Shideler kids raised $1,600, which will be matched by the Brainstorm Development Group.
