A search is underway for a woman who went missing along the Kansas Turnpike in Chase County.

On Wednesday evening, a state trooper saw a woman walking away from a car parked on the turnpike near Matfield Green. When he was able to turn around to see if the woman needed assistance, she was gone.

Area law enforcement officers have since organized a search of the area near her abandoned vehicle. That mile marker is 19 miles south of Emporia and 11 miles north of the Matfield Green service area.

Several people are now in the area looking for 51-year-old Debra L. Johnston. She's described as a white female, about 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds.

KAKE reports her family is concerned because Johnston has a history of medical issues and may be in need of immediate medical care.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kansas Highway Patrol at (316) 682-4537 or the Chase County Sheriff's Office at (620) 273-6313, extension 1.
