Woman Killed Crossing SW 29th St. Identified

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A 55 year-old woman was killed as she tried to cross a main Topeka thoroughfare late Thursday evening has been identified as Janet Ransom, age 55 of Topeka. Ransom was treated at the scene, and was then transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.

According to the Topeka Police Dept. The incident shut down a stretch of SW 29th Street just west of the I-470 interchange.

She was trying to cross in the 5600 block of 29th Street shortly after 8:00 p.m. when a westbound sedan struck her. Officers noted she was using a cane as she tried to cross the five-lane artery and was wearing dark clothing.

Police have shut down SW 29th St. from SW Arrowhead to SW McClure while the Topeka Police Accident Reconstruction Team investigates. They expect it to remain closed for much of the night.
