A local group will get a little longer to prove it can get the money to make its dreams for the former Sumner School a reality.
The Topeka City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to grant a 60-day extension for Community First. The group wants to put a private school and other programs in the former Sumner building at SW 4th and Western.
Community First originally had a May 31st deadline to submit a plan outlining its ability to obtain financing for renovating the building and supporting the programs, an amount estimated at $3.5 million. City staff the proposal submitted by that deadline did not meet requirements. The proposal included a request for more time to shore up what Community First said were additional funding prospects.
