A Ft. Riley soldier died late last week from injuries sustained when his vehicle came under attack in Afghanistan, a Ft. Riley spokesperson announced Tuesday.

Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Hilton, 37, was traveling near Forward Operating Base Shank, in Afghanistan, when his vehicle tripped an improvised explosive device, then came under fire from a rocket propelled grenade and small arms fire.

The eighteen year veteran from Livonia, Mich., was an Infantryman serving on a Military Transition Team assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He had been with the 1st. Inf. Div. since February.

Transition team members come to Ft. Riley for a 60-day training cycle during which they learn to prepare small teams of American Soldiers, Airmen, and Sailors to advise, teach, mentor, and coach their Iraqi or Afghan counterparts.

Sgt. 1st Class Hilton is the 152nd Fort Riley service member to die while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
