A Douglas County judge criticized for sentencing two men last year to only 60 days in jail for having sex with an intoxicated 13-year-old has given them much longer sentences.
District Judge Paula Martin sentenced William Haney of Lawrence to six years and 10 months in prison for statutory rape. Brian Ussery of Tonganoxie was sentenced to five years and three months in prison, also for statutory rape.
Last year, Martin gave the men a combination of light jail sentences, probation and community service, saying the girl was an active participant. Statutory rape usually carries a sentence of at least 13 years in prison.
The Kansas Court of Appeals stepped in and ordered that the men be resentenced.
Martin's decision sparked an unsuccessful attempt to vote the judge off the bench.
