$1M Bond Set For Mother-In-Law Of Murder Victim

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Bond is set at $1 million for a woman accused in her daughter-in-law's death.

Manuela Alcala made her first appearance in Shawnee County District Court Tuesday morning. She was booked into the local jail from El Paso, Texas Monday afternoon.

She's charged with first degree murder and conspiracy in the October 18th death of 34-year-old Ashley Alcala. Ashley Alcala was found unresponsive in her home on SE Kentucky. She later died at a Topeka hospital. Authorities have not commented on her cause of death.

Manuela Alcala spoke through an interpreter at her Tuesday court appearance. The judge set a November 15th hearing to decide a date for her preliminary hearing.

Alcala's son and Ashley's husband, Manuel Alcala also is held on a $1 million bond on murder charges.

Two other suspects, Manuel's brother Gabino Alcala and Benjamin Anaya remain jailed on murder charges in El Paso. Efforts to extradite them to Kansas continue.
