...DAMAGE SURVEY RESULTS FROM JUNE 11-12 TORNADOES IN NORTHEAST
KANSAS...

DAMAGE SURVEY TEAMS HAVE REPORTED BACK ON THEIR PRELIMINARY FINDINGS
FROM LAST NIGHTS TORNADOES IN NORTHEAST KANSAS. PRELIMINARY DATA
INDICATES THAT FOUR TORNADOES TOUCHED DOWN FROM TWO DIFFERENT
SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORMS BETWEEN 1022 PM AND JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT.

ONE TORNADO STRUCK THE CITY OF CHAPMAN...WHERE EF3 DAMAGE WAS NOTED.
ONE FATALITY OCCURRED IN THE CITY OF CHAPMAN. THE SECOND TORNADO
FROM THIS STORM IN NORTHEAST KANSAS STRUCK MANHATTAN AND THE K-STATE
CAMPUS. EF4 DAMAGE WAS NOTED IN SOUTHWEST MANHATTAN. DETAILS ON THE
THIRD TORNADO THAT AFFECTED JACKSON COUNTY AND THE TOWN OF SOLDIER
WILL BE ISSUED SHORTLY. THE FOURTH TORNADO STRUCK IN FAR SOUTHERN
DICKINSON COUNTY NEAR CARLTON. THIS TORNADO TRACK HAS NOT YET BEEN
RATED BUT WILL BE EARLY FRIDAY AS A DAMAGE SURVEY TEAM WILL RETURN
TO DICKINSON COUNTY.

THE TORNADO COUNT IS CONSIDERED PRELIMINARY AT THIS POINT.
ADDITIONAL SURVEYS...AND FEEDBACK FROM LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
AND SPOTTERS...MAY YIELD ADDITIONAL TRACKS.

HERE ARE THE SPECIFICS OF THE FIRST TWO TORNADO TRACKS RATED ON
THURSDAY. DETAILS ON THE SOLDIER TORNADO WILL BE ISSUED EARLY THIS
EVENING...AND ADDITIONAL SURVEYS ARE PLANNED INTO DICKINSON COUNTY
ON FRIDAY.

* EVENT LOCATION - TORANDO TRACK SURVEYED THUS FAR JUST WITHIN THE
CITY OF CHAPMAN. PRELIMINARY REPORTS INDICATE THE TORNADO TRACKED
FROM NEAR CHAPMAN TO NORTHWEST OF JUNCTION CITY BEFORE THE TORNADO
DISSIPATED.

* MAXIMUM PATH WIDTH - ESTIMATED 1/2 MILE

* PATH LENGTH - UNKNOWN...WILL BE DETERMINED ON FRIDAY

* INJURIES - 4

* DISCUSSION/DAMAGE - EXTENSIVE DAMAGE WAS NOTED WITHIN THE CITY OF
CHAPMAN. THE ELEMENTARY/JUNIOR HIGH ON MARSHALL AVENUE WAS HEAVILY
DAMAGED AS WELL AS THE HIGH SCHOOL. ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON THE
SPECIFICS OF THE DAMAGE IN CHAPMAN...AS WELL AS ALONG THE TORNADO
PATH OUTSIDE OF CHAPMAN...WILL BE ADDED ON FRIDAY.

* EVENT TYPE - EF4 TORNADO

* EVENT LOCATION - TORNADO TRACKED FROM AROUND 1 MILE NORTH OF OGDEN
AT 1048 PM...INTO MANHATTAN WHERE THE TORNADO DISSIPATED JUST EAST
OF THE K-STATE CAMPUS AROUND 1103 PM.

* PEAK WIND - 170 MPH ESTIMATED

* MAXIMUM PATH WIDTH - 1/4 MILE

* PATH LENGTH - 8.64 MILES

* INJURIES - NONE

* FATALITIES - NONE

* DISCUSSION/DAMAGE - THE TORNADO TRACKED FROM JUST NORTH OF OGDEN
TO NORTH OF THE MANHATTAN AIRPORT WHERE DAMAGE WAS NOTED TO A
FARMSTEAD. THE MANHATAN AUTOMATED OBSERVING SYSTEM REPORTED A PEAK
WIND GUST OF 66 MPH AT 1053 PM. EF4 DAMAGE WAS NOTED IN SOUTHWEST
MANHATTAN...AT AMHERST AVENUE AND PEACHTREE CIRCLE...WHERE NUMEROUS
FRAME HOMES WERE DESTROYED. THE TORNADO CROSSED HIGHWAY 113 AT
LITTLE APPLE TOYOTA. AT THE CAR DEALERSHIP NUMEROUS CARS WERE TOSSED
AND WINDOWS WERE BLOWN OUT OF THE SHOWROOM. THE NEARBY ACE HARDWARE
WAS ALSO DESTRYOED. FROM THIS LOCATION...THE TORNADO MOVED NORTHEAST
CROSSING ANDERSON AVENUE AT MIDLAND AVENUE AND THEN DAMAGED LEE
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. EF1 DAMAGE WAS NOTED JUST WEST OF THE K-STATE
CAMPUS AND ON CAMPUS ITSELF...WITH NUMEROUS WINDOWS BLOWN OUT OF
BUILDINGS. DEBRIS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS IN MANHATTAN WAS NOTED ON THE
CAMPUS. THE TORNADO DISSIPATED SHORTLY AFTER 11 PM JUST EAST OF THE
CAMPUS AT NORTH MANHATTAN AVENUE AND CENTENIAL DRIVE.
