The debate over how teaching evolution in Kansas has some residents and government officials worrying about the Sunflower State's image.
This week, the State Board of Education adopted new standards that take a skeptical view of Darwin's theory. That runs counter to the view of national science groups that the theory is well-established and nearly universally accepted.
Commentary had turned negative well before Tuesday's vote.
Now, Governor Sebelius' office reports getting more than 100 angry e-mails in the two following days, more than half from people saying they won't visit Kansas.
Commerce Department spokesman Caleb Asher says the board's action makes Kansas more difficult to promote.
But intelligent design advocates who backed the new standards predicted the fuss would die down.
