Trial Date Set in Construction Workers' Death

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ A Sept. 2 trial date is set for a 48-year-old woman charged in the hit-run deaths of two highway workers near Lawrence in 2007.

Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin said Tuesday that there's enough evidence to try Ramona Morgan on two counts of second-degree murder. Morgan, of Chewelah, Wash., remains jailed in $200,000 bond.

Martin said the crimes showed "an extreme indifference to human life.''

In a preliminary hearing Monday, several witnesses testified that a speeding pickup twice drove through a work zone on U.S. 59 south of Lawrence on Sept. 11, 2007. The second time, highway workers Rolland Griffith and Tyrone Korte were struck and killed.

Morgan was arrested after leading law officers on a chase that ended in neighboring Osage County.
