Hail pounded through Manhattan and Alma this morning crashing windshields and smashing gutters on it's way to the ground.

Several motorists pulled underneath bridges to seek shelter from the falling hail.

When the storm passed in Alma it left shattered glass, holes in roofs, divots that made one person's yard look like a golf course.

In Manhattan, no vehicle was spared at Briggs Auto Plaza, and in the airport parking lot travelers will come home to find their windows shattered and damage making their vehicles not even able to drive.

"Oh my, I have never been through anything like that. The damage is just amazing, every car, not a single on got spared, everywhere you go there's glass," said Dennis Voshel, an Employee at Briggs Auto.

"Never have I seen anything like this before. It's like a warzone," said Scott Teenor, Manager of Briggs Auto.

The dealership's early damage estimate is a half million dollars, but it could be much more.

freaking dog, is that all you people worry about?

Posted by: Frances Location: Wimberley, Tx. on Jun 9, 2008 at 05:08 PM
It is now the 9th. Do you know about the dog? Surely you could contact these folks with a phone call to see if the dog survived. I hope they took the little fellow to the vet.

RESPONSE: As we've reported, a veterninarian saw the dog and gave him medication and he is expected to survive. More information is on Rae Chelle Davis' blog.

Just and Thought for WIBW: You know, I think that it would be great if you guys did a follow up on this little dog. Instead of showing him being close to death....show that he survived, and his owners learned a hard lesson. The only thing that came out of showing this little guy on video was all the people that now care about him.

Reply: Thank you for your comment. We have been working to get a picture of him for a couple days. The family has been very busy and I am hopeful that we might get one today. ~ Rae Chelle

if this is all you people have time for is to complain about the dog, you obviously need something better to do with your time. Yes, the situation with the dog is bad, no one can predict that size of hail and what happened, happened what if it was an inside dog and just happened to be outside for a little bit or something!?! Get over it!! There are tons of other animals besides that one that I'm sure were outside and couldn't get to shelter!! Life goes on.....

I am incredibly disappointed and disgusted with WIBW's editorial decisions on this story. Discussing physical property damage is an obvious news story but then the sudden switch to a suffering animal wasn't even relevant. It did not belong in that story. WIBW should be ashamed of themselves for making such a poor and unprofessional decision. I will no longer be a regular viewer of WIBW.

I did not expect the end of the video which showed that poor little dog. I shut it off right away. It maybe could have been mentioned, but why show it???? Very poor taste in my opinon.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was very disappointed with your coverage of the hail damage from Monday. The TV news departments focused on the main auto business to be hit, but nobody said anything about the call centers and mfg plant that probably ended up with at least as much damage as Briggs (who I'm very sure liked the advertisement time you have given them).I work at the AT&T call center and while I wasn't there at the time it was hit, you would have gotten a much better human interest story out of it.Nobody really cares about a car dealer who will probably just hike the prices of any future cars sold. You want interest, you should have gone to one of the other places and talked to one of the hundreds of people who were standing around, some having lost their only mode of transportation or who only had liability insurance because they can't afford full coverage. Maybe someone who had finally been able to save enough money to get their dream car only to have it totaled out a week later.

laughing......I believe that Sandra has more of an issue that this was even shown and reported. Things happen, and if the owner has taken precautions (like a doghouse), then yes, it would be an accident. However, it did NOT need to be shown on the news. It was in poor taste and absolutely irresponsible reporting. End of story.

I understand that no one could have predicted the hail storm and what happened to the dog, but to air that story about the dog, just seemed tacky and inappropriate. I hope that the RESPONSE wasn't just to pacify the viewing audience.

Sandra, do you really think that they are going to dedicate every evenings news casts to that puppy, just because you threatened to watch another channel. Settle down. It was sad, but a fact of life. It was not like everybody everywhere was prepared to have hail of that size fall. It was an act of nature, they didn't shove the puppy or cows out right when it started just to cause harm. Just calm down a little and think of how much harm could have been done to a person trying to go out and round up those cows during that hail. And that puppy probably had a dog house and possibly could not get to it before the hail started falling. Think it though before you start threatening and expecting some things that might be impossible.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 3, 2008 at 03:40 PM
Personally, WIBW just revealed the owner of the puppy for what he truly is. An idiot! Come on, the dog should at least have a dog house if he's an outside dog. People are just plan cruel these days.

Posted by: Stacy Location: Manhattan, KS on Jun 3, 2008 at 03:01 PM
The way the injured dog was presented with the owner saying it was "too late" made it seem as though the dog had died, which made showing the footage of it suffering unconscionable. If the dog is expected to pull through as the note below says, I hope there's a follow up. I agree with Sandra below, that dog needed serious care, not just a house call, so I hope that the brief note added here was accurate and not something said just to placate upset viewers.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 3, 2008 at 02:02 PM
That was not appropriate to film that suffering dog and then put it on TV for everyone to watch.

Posted by: Jaime Location: Junction City, KS on Jun 3, 2008 at 01:44 PM
In response to "Anonymous"... dogs and puppies are domesticated animals that deserve to have shelter given to them. Maybe this dog was left out on a chain and had nowhere to hide. And FYI, most cattle are at least given shelter and birds can hide where ever they want to. Have a little compassion for a puppy.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 3, 2008 at 01:14 PM
OMG, it's only a dog, how about cows & birds, that stupid dog should know where to hide.

Posted by: Sandra Location: Topeka on Jun 3, 2008 at 11:37 AM
I think the WIBW employee who allowed the suffering puppy portion of the video & the poor cattle trapped in a pasture without shelter which was shown at the begining of that video should be fired! Did anyone report the owner for animal abuse? If not, WHY? Responsible pet owners know that pets should always have appropriate shelter available for all types of Kansas weather. I would also like to see a follow up interview with the vet that treated the puppy. At this point, based on what I saw on the video, I don't believe that vet could effectively treat that poor puppy without extensive testing such as xrays & ultra sound etc all of which can't take place with a simple house call visit. I will continue following the WIBW 6:00 news for the remaining days of this week but I will switch to 27 or 49 news if WIBW fails to report on this issue. By report I mean repeated reports during the normal 6:00 & 10:00 news not a hidden 5 second clip shown in the middle of the sports. I'm very angry.

Posted by: Jaime Location: Junction City on Jun 3, 2008 at 09:42 AM
Ok I just watched that video and I am furious about the dog at the end of the video. First of all why did everyone have time to film that and not get the dog medical treatement?? And second of all the owner should be ashamed for having the dog outside without shelter! I am disgusted by that footage and with the owner! I believe that is called neglect when a pet is left outside without shelter and then we are made to watch this poor animal suffer?! Unbelievable.

Posted by: PJ Location: Topeka on Jun 3, 2008 at 07:52 AM
I'm very disappointed with WIBW right now. The puppy at the end of the story was too much for me. The story was good until the end. I was so angry that you sensationalized the story with that poor animal's whimpering. It made me cry. Please have a follow up on the news and let us know how the pup is doing.

Posted by: Jaime on Jun 2, 2008 at 10:12 PM
Yes, I could have done without the whimpering puppy as well. That was very unnecessary. I think people already knew how bad it was without having to show that. But I know....its the media. As for the puppy I really hope that he ends up ok. It is just so sad. I had tears.

Posted by: Denise Location: Manhattan, KS on Jun 2, 2008 at 09:12 PM
You should have gone to the industrial park behind the airport. At Florence Mfg., the damage was more extensive than shown on the video. Many people are now left without transportation to and from work. Damage to the roof of the building caused extensive water damage inside. As the cars were being towed away, you could see a mountain of glass covering the parking lot.

Posted by: Millie Location: KS on Jun 2, 2008 at 08:52 PM
I agree with Natalie, that was heartbreaking. I hope and pray the poor puppy will be ok. Please let us know. I feel sorry for all the other animals that were in this bad hail storm.

Posted by: Natalie Location: Manhattan on Jun 2, 2008 at 08:26 PM
I'm sorry, it was a good story, but my eyes actually filled with tears when the puppy come onto the screen. I could have done without that. Could you at least post a message saying if the dog is going to be ok or not? I know animals get hurt by hail, but I don't need to see the poor animal whimpering in pain on the video. Thanks.

RESPONSE: We checked with the family, and they say their veterinarian came out and gave the puppy some penicillin and some other medicine to reduce internal swelling. They'll continue medication for five days, but it's looking like he will pull through.
