(Jewell-KS) -- On Thursday afternoon Drew Switzer and Rob Peppers headed out to North Central Kansas to chase some twisters and they ended up being very successful. They first spotted a couple weak wall clouds that didn't amount to much and then Jeremy Goodwin advised them of a huge tornadic t-storm moving into Mitchell County. A huge rotating wall cloud was visible from miles away. This wall cloud had a "beaver tail" leading into the updraft and the structure of the storm had a classic "space ship" appearance. Rob and Drew chased this storm through portions of Northern Mitchell County. The video attached to this story shows the funnel cloud as it passes over HWY 181 and then Drew and Rob capture the twister as it touches down just North of Corinth. You can also see two "twin" tornadoes in the lightning flashes as night is falling. Night came quickly and Drew and Rob decided it was too dangerous to continue the chase so they pulled off and headed back to Topeka. The tornado continued Northeast through SE Jewell county where damage was reported on the South side of Jewell and then across Republic County where damage was reported on the North side of Belleville.

At this time no injuries have been reported and the National Weather service will get out tomorrow and survey the damage to place a rating on this tornado. Most of the time the tornado was on the ground it was over very rural areas with pasture and crop fields.

7:33 AM UPDATE: Scott Davies, Mitchell County Emergency Management Director says there were no injuries in the county, and no fatalities.

He says 6-to-10 homes were damaged, some minor, some extensive.

He estimates several tornadoes were on the ground.

The Red Cross is on the way, and will assess the damage.

Our place was hit by this tonado and we were too far from any town to hear sirens even if they did go off. We have a weather radio that sounds an alarm when there is a severe wether anouncement from the weather service. We had plenty of time to get to the basement and were out of harms way. Please don't entirely depend on the sirens, GET A WEATHER RADIO! I've known of people that have splept through sirens and the alarm on a weather radio is much louder than any alarm clock and sure to get you out of bed! This happened late at night when I would not have had the TV or sterio on. With a battery back up I was able to take the weather radio in the basement. Thanks to storm spotters and doppler radar anouncements stating the exact location of the tornado were given and I knew when it was about to hit our home and when it was safe to come out of the basement. Keep one in your home and take it with you when you travel.
