Legislators Will Continue Pushing Smoking Ban Save Email Print

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ A top state health official is promising that a push for a statewide ban on smoking will continue next year.

The Kansas Health Policy Authority pushed for a ban this year in most public places, including restaurants. The idea also had the support of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

It drew strong opposition from business groups, and neither the House nor the Senate voted on the idea this year.

But Executive Director Marcia Nielsen says the health authority will ask legislators to pass a bill next year. And she says it probably has a better chance of passing because 2009 is not an election year.

Nielsen made her comments Wednesday during a retreat for the staff of Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

seems to me that their time would be more well spent (and we are paying their salaries) to figure out (and in a hurry) what needs to be done about the gas and diesel fuel prices, orthere will no cigarettes at the stores, or anything else...they always waste their time with the lesser important stuff. have you noticed "no one cares!" some one in the government better wake up and get something done. we are going down hill fast, but perhaps that is what they want...but you know what, it is you and me who are struggling...they can spend millions and millions on campaigns and contribution to them and then really expect we working people to believe they really care? not

Do you think Shawnee County should take the City of Topeka up on its offer to television commission meetings, too?

Yes, but I wouldn't be home to watch them.
No, it wouldn't be that interesting.
I might be interested in watching a webcast at my convenience.
