Law enforcement in Pottawatomie County caught a fugitive who was on the lose Thursday morning about two miles west of St. Marys.

Authorities say at 1:37 this morning a St. Marys police office pulled over what he believed to be a stolen civilian vehicle.

He took a male into custody, handcuffed him and put him into the front of his patrol car. Authorities say he somehow got his handcuffs off and took control of the car.

They believe he tried to strike the officer with the car. The officer also fired on the car five times as it fled, according to police.

The vehicle was also recovered about two miles west of St. Marys.

The Pottawatomie Sheriff's Department conducted the search in the area between Belvue and St. Marys, and a few miles north or south of Highway 24.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the search including the Highway Patrol aircraft unit and K-9 units.

At the time of the search the suspect was considered dangerous and warned people not to approach him.

The individual taken into custody six hours later and was described as a white man about five foot eight, 130 to 140 pounds, was unshaven, with shorter blonde hair. He was wearing blue jeans, tennis shoes, and two t-shirts.
