A State Board of Education member who voted to rewrite the science standards draws a Democratic challenge in next year's elections.
Republican John Bacon of Olathe is expected to seek a third term. Another Olathe Republican, Harry McDonald, announced earlier that he'll seek the GOP nomination.
Friday, Don Weiss, 53, announced he'll run as a Democrat for Bacon's seat on the board.
Weiss says he made the decision after the board voted 6-4 this week to add language skeptical of evolution to the science standards.
Bacon is part of the board's conservative majority. Four of the six are up for re-election next year, and three have already drawn opposition.
