Governor Sebelius' office says planeloads of Hurricane Katrina victims will not be coming to Kansas after all.
Federal officials informed Kansas that the evacuees from the Louisiana area refused to go, saying they wanted to stay and rebuild. About 500 refugees were expected to land in Wichita Monday, September 12.
The governor also said President Bush has granted an emergency declaration in Kansas that provides federal dollars to help offset the costs of hurricane relief. About 800 storm evacuees came to Kansas on their own.
The Kansas Adjutant General's Department says it won't need shelters set up across the state to welcome the new people. But officials say preparing those shelters is good practice if there is another major catastrophe.
