As many as 500 evacuees from Hurricane Katrina will be flown to Wichita Monday in the next wave of people fleeing the disaster.

Gov. Sebelius said the state was told it would see evacuees coming to Mid-Continent Airport on commercial aircraft Monday. The people are coming straight from New Orleans and have been some of the last to leave the city that has been flooded for nearly two weeks.

Already there are about 800 evacuees scattered throughout Kansas. The state has plans to handle up to 4,500 people.

Sebelius, who donated a pint of blood to help keep supplies high during the disaster, described the situation with evacuees as a work in progress.

The Kansas National Guard has 230 people in Louisiana and Mississippi assisting with the response.
