State and local agencies are still waiting for the next wave of evacuees fleeing the damage of Hurricane Katrina to arrive in Kansas.
The adjutant general's spokeswoman Joy Moser said Thursday that about 800 people are in Kansas and that about 50 were processed through a center in Topeka. That group is staying in private locations, not shelters.
She says Kansas is able to handle about 4,500 evacuees, but it's uncertain if that entire number will arrive.
Additional evacuees could still arrive Thursday. Moser said they would get to Kansas by the weekend, if they are coming at all.
The Kansas National Guard has about 230 members in Louisiana and Mississippi assisting with response and recovery from the storm.
