The jury in the federal fraud trial of two former Westar Energy executives completes its first full day of deliberations.
The panel of 10 women and two men recessed late Thursday afternoon without reaching a verdict. They'll return to work Friday morning at the federal courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas.
Former Westar CEO David Wittig and former chief strategy officer Douglas Lake are accused of looting the Topeka-based utility before they were forced out in late 2002.
Federal prosecutors contend Wittig and Lake engineered extravagant salaries and benefits for themselves at the expense of Westar shareholders.
Defense lawyers argue the two men did nothing illegal. They say Wittig and Lake received all necessary approval from Westar's directors for their actions.
This is the second trial for Wittig and Lake. The first one ended in December with jurors unable to reach verdicts on half the 40 counts against them.
