Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon says officials have finished their on site investigation into Monday morning's fire that destroyed St. Ann's Church.

Sheriff Calhoon says samples of the charred remains of St. Ann's have been sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for testing but that it would be a while before the results come back.

But that right now there is no concrete evidence one way or the other on the cause of the fire, meaning that the cause is still listed as undetermined. He did, however, confirm that the fire started on the west end of the church.

Sheriff Calhoon says church board members have already started the process of determining what they will do with what remains of the church.

EFFINGHAM, Kan. (AP) _ An accelerant-sniffing dog is helping
search for the cause of a fire that destroyed a 111-year-old church
in northeast Kansas.

Eight volunteer fire companies and about 100 firefighters battled the Monday morning fire that destroyed St. Ann's Catholic Church in Effingham. The cause is undetermined, but Atchison County Undersheriff Larry Myer said there have been a few recent arson fires in the area.

Officials said fire crews poured 150,000 gallons of water on the flames, draining the town's water tower and forcing several area
schools to close Monday. Firefighters hauled water from other
communities and even farm ponds in the area to battle the flames.

Investigators from the Kansas State Fire Marshal's office and the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms surveyed the
scene Monday afternoon.

A prayer vigil was held Monday night in the church's parking lot as the community and congregation struggle with the loss of St. Ann's.

Fire crews in Effingham spent Monday morning battling a blaze in St. Ann's Catholic Church.

The church has been declared a total loss after the fire completely destroyed it, according to Atchison County Under Sheriff Larry Myer.

Myer said the blaze started approximately 3:05 a.m. and was still burning shortly before 8 a.m.

The investigation is just getting underway and the ATF has been notified according to Myer.

Steve Weisman, Superintendent of Atchison County Community Schools, informed 13 News that all schools in Effingham will be closed today (Monday). That includes Effingham Elementary, Atchison County Community Middle School, and Atchison County Community High School.

Weisman said the water tower was completely drained while fighting the fire, and he did not expect to have water back by this afternoon.

All school activities will be held as usual though.

If you have any information about this fire, Myer asks that you give him a call at 913-370-2301.

It's the strangest thing that last week I was awakened in the middle of the night to scan an old ... I mean old picture and to "colorize" it to send it to friends and relatives. Turns out it was my Grandma Loretta Burns marrying Paul Justin Sullivan in that Church on September 15, 1919 - the same Church that my Grandma Loretta was baptized. I don't know why I was moved to go get this picture out of the garage in the Tampa Bay Area and colorize and forward it when I did, but as this happened, this Church was burning to the ground. God indeed works in mysterious ways. My Grandmother died on 9-11 ... but 9/11/1993.

I was so sad to hear the church burned down. I grew up in Effingham. I loved going to the picnics held there during the summers. I was so glad to hear the Pastor is ok. I know it has been a great loss to the community, us that have moved away are feeling the effects also. My fellow church members here are praying for the St Ann's members and also praying they find the funds to rebuild. Though nothing could compare to the beauty that they all lost. God Bless

It is a shame that such a beautiful landmark went up in flames. I had my first communion, confirmed, and was married in Sacred Heart in Newbury(north of Paxico). It holds a lot of beauty and memories for me and my family, and I will always consider myself a member of that parish. The church in Effingham is the same for everyone who attended mass there and was part of that special feeling of being in the presence of the Holy Spirit in such a wonderful church. I feel for those who attended mass there, and as a fellow Roman Catholic, stand with you in sorrow in your loss. I hope this was not an arson as previously thought. What kind of a person would do that if indeed comes to fruition?

I was baptised in this church and attended weekly with my grandpa Dave. I will miss it and I pray for everyone who attended this great place. I know the community will make it through. I will always remember St. Ann's church.

I grew up attending St. Ann's & for me, there are no words to describe this loss. This church was not just another Catholic Church-it was home. St. Ann's holds many memories for all of us that went there & the whole community as well. I remember going to mass as a child & when Grandpa went with us he would tell my brothers & I to 'pipe down'. I remember playing outside after mass on Saturday evenings in the summer while parents visited with each other. I have SO many memories that will be with me forever. I heard it said last night that maybe this was God's plan & it happened as a way to bring the community together in these hard times we face & deal with this huge loss as one large family rather then just a small town. Tragic & awful as it is that this happened, I believe that. I witnessed, & was a part of a very large gathering of friends, family, & neighbors pulling together, showing their love & support for each other last night. My heart goes out to all in the parish & community.

My husband and I got married at this church. Our first daughter was also baptized here and my father in law had his funeral here. It was always a comfort for our family. Everything was so familiar. We are sad and also happy no one was hurt in the fire or fighting it. Our prayers are with everyone in Effingham. God Bless!!!

My mother, Amalia Hansen Helms was baptized in St. Ann's Catholic Church. She was born to Peter & Emelia Hansen on October 26, 1901 in Effingham, KS. One of the beautiful stained glass windows in the church represented John and Amalia Richter who were her grandparents. During my mother's childhood, the Richters who came to our country from Austria owned the old creamery in Effingham. My mother's father, Peter Hansen came to America from Denmark and worked on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. My mother had eight children - all of whom cherish the history and our connection to Effingham. We are deeply saddened to learn of this loss. May God bless your church family and community. Although my siblings are settled in CA, KS, TX and TN, we have all traveled to Effingham to explore our heritage.

Sigh. What a terrible loss. Although it hasn't affected me as much as some, affect me it does. My mother, who posted below i believe, grew up in that church, was married in that church, and attended her brother's and two nephew's weddings there, me along with her. I attended nearly every Christmas mass of my life up at St. Anne's when we'd go up to visit my grandma. When i think of Christmas, I think of St. Anne's and the beautiful windows. I think of all the beautiful Christmas music, music I'll never get to hear again. Christmas mass at St. Anne's is by far the highlight of Christmas for me. So sad to see it burn like that, and terribly devastating.

Knowing how much this church was a part of my heritage, my parents and our family, losing this history is like losing a piece of my family all over again.

Went to church there on Sunday morning,4-20-2008. I was sitting there admiring what beautiful windows and how lucky I was to grow up in that church, not knowing it would be the last time I would step into the church as it stood. So sad in my heart for this tragic loss.

So sorry about the devastating loss of beautiful St. Anne's Catholic Church. Thankfully no one was injured. Yet we know that the people are the Body of Christ. Prayers being said for all affected.

I really hope that the fire was not set by someone. That would be so horrible if it was though whoever did it should go to jail for the rest of there life on absolutely NO BAIL option.

Pictures made me sad. Been to church there many times and took my marriage preparation instructions back in 1969 from the resident priest at that time. Effingham has certainly lost another landmark with the loss of this church. I hope they rebuild it.

The church was 110 years old according to the cornerstone I saw at a September wedding there.
